Cazumbá School
A school of encounters between art, agroecology and territory.
Cazumbá School brings together workshops, conversations and experiences, in person and online, with people who create with the body, images, words and the land. Its programme takes shape with each invitation, in dialogue with artists, workers, master craftspeople, local communities and amateurs of many practices.
A school in motion
School is a wavering word. From the Greek, scholē, it embodied leisure, idleness, play. Latin made it schola, a place for gathering and learning. The English word shares the Proto-Indo-European root skel-, which means to cut — as if cutting off our shackles, or, in tandem with another word of the same root, sculpture, as we carve in order to create.
To eat languages, stir them within our guts and give them back to the world transformed is a gesture in consonance with what Brazilian educator Luiz Rufino calls the pedagogy of the crossroads, led by the crossings and marafos of Exu, Elegbara, the mouth that devours everything.
Here, we summon Cazumbá to the game. A borderland creature, non-binary, wandering between the visible and the invisible worlds, a bridge between the human animal, the animals and the forest, Cazumbá is a force born from within everything that lives. It is Cazumbá who sets the tone of our celebration: it plays, provokes and exists in the encounter with difference.
What brings us together
We want to open a circle for sharing knowledge and for the collective building of processes and projects. In it, art meets cultivation, crafts, the memory of places and the ways of living that arise from everyday contact with the land.
What do we consider art, and who takes part in that choice? What do we learn from the gestures of planting, cooking, building, caring, telling and celebrating? How can traditional knowledge and working practices help us imagine a popular education turned towards the future we want?
These are questions to be lived in company. Each encounter can bring together people who inhabit a territory and people who arrive in it; artists and amateurs of the body and of the land; experiences of creation, work and learning that rarely share the same room.
How the school happens
Cazumbá School is conceived and coordinated by Larissa Figueiredo. Its composition changes with each proposal: we invite people and groups to create and lead workshops, conversation circles, practices and one-off gatherings, in person or online.

When we work with local communities, we seek to build the activities in dialogue with those who live and produce knowledge in the territory, recognising their choices, their authorship and their forms of participation. The school is made in the relationships each encounter allows us to cultivate.
